No Virus Can Stop That!

Rita left the turmoil in Sudan two years ago. She is fierce about doing what she needs to do to make a better life for her children and eventually, become a contributing citizen.

But Corona Virus hit…

“Mom, what does this mean?”

“Habibi, I don’t know.”

For immigrant families, an already complicated life became much more complicated. Fathers were laid off and had to figure out unemployment when they could not even read the application. Mothers who don’t know English became full-time teachers. Children were lost in the shuffle.

But for Rita’s family life didn’t fall to pieces BECAUSE YOU GAVE.

Rita’s family still needed English, still needed community – perhaps more than they had before. Now there were endless updates and orders to understand. Now she had to “teach” her children. Her low English skills made it impossible without support.

Your gifts enabled families like Rita’s to have someone to help them walk through this new COVID-19 world.

  • Rita and her classmates attended Zoom English classes.  Instead of having conversation practice over tea in her home, she talked with teachers over Facebook.
  • Rita’s preschool children received craft bins and fun science videos from our preschool teachers.
  • Rita’s teacher helped her 1st grader with homework over FaceTime.
  • Cakes and treats appeared on Rita’s porch to let her family know they belonged and that Jesus always cares about them.

Because of your generosity and continuing commitment to welcome and empower immigrants, Rita’s family continued to learn and connect with those who cared about them.

In many ways, connections grew deeper because she knew that so much effort was going into everything that was done.

Welcoming internationals may look different during a pandemic, but the mission to share the hope and love of Jesus never will.

NO VIRUS CAN STOP THAT!

So now what?

This fall families will be safely learning together in person. You can help Rita’s children and other kids get the help they need to not fall dangerously behind! Your gift impacts lives for years to come.

Your generosity also means that our new home is open to Rita, her family, and so many others.

You Learned THAT in school??

Yusef asked as he watched his wife, Kazima.  She’d leaned in toward their preteen son, looked him right in the eye, and told him, “It’s okay to feel angry, but it’s not okay to yell and throw things.” She took a breath. “But if you want, you can ask to walk away for a...
